Throwback (Musical) Thursday – City Life

Getting recognition in hip-hop as an Asian artist can be incredibly challenging. Think about how many Asian American hip-hop artists you can tick off on your fingers…the number is limited, am I right? And no, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t that many out there, there are…we just don’t know them because our music industry, like all of our other media, doesn’t give them any due attention or respect. To combat this, there are a handful of different projects and companies working to narrow the gap between the east and the west on this particular front, and I am in full support of their work.

Musical Monday – She’s a Baby? And You Still Want to Date Her?

I will freely admit that I am not a young man in my early to mid-twenties. I have never been and will never be that guy. I don’t get the burgeoning need to be all manly and dominant. I don’t really understand the desire for a girlfriend who is really immature, a danger to herself, needs to be constantly protected, and can’t be left alone. It seems to be a cross-cultural phenomenon though, I’ve seen it all over the place in both fiction and reality. How many of us confident, capable, smart ladies out there have felt a bit left in the dating dust by some cute little thing that can’t be trusted to use a can opener? But man, songs written by those guys about those girls can be super charming.

Throwback (Musical) Thursday – Completely Gratuitous

I am not so thoroughly entrenched in Kpop that I know all about all of the groups that are or have debuted…not by any stretch of the imagination. But I am prone to falling down Youtube video black holes that reveal to me the magic of the unknown. And when I say magic, I mean super pervy noona magic. Like I am the super pervy noona and they are magic.

Musical Monday – Nod to the Creepy

Unlike my husband who has a home office in the basement where he can play Overwatch (I assume on a team with VIXX’s Hongbin and Monsta X’s Kihyun) with his door closed, my home computer is in the main living area of the house. That means when I’m perusing new music everyone is there to put in their two cents. Everyone. For better or for worse.

They all have opinions.

Throwback (Musical) Thursday – Why Do I Love This So Much?

Posted by SaraG on April 6, 2017

Music

There is definitely a certain type of song that gets me all emotion…like totally emo. We’ve all heard them, I’ve put a few of them up here or mentioned them in passing or forced them onto many of you in one way or another. But sometimes I stumble across a song from out of nowhere and it changes the game. I hear the first few notes and think, “Eh, it’s alright, but not my thing.” And then…then, something happens. A certain feel, a set of lyrics, a voice crack at just the right moment, and WHAM I’m feeling it so much it’s almost hard to breathe. I collect these songs on a playlist I call flutter…because they make my little heart palpitate. The playlist is a hodgepodge of songs that all mean something to me, either from a specific moment in my life or just in general. It includes songs from all over the world and in a few different languages. I love it and I hate it. It makes me feel things and I go back to it over and over and over.

Musical Monday – Too Many Good Things

Just a few short weeks ago I was having a conversation, as I am want to do, with one of my fine text-a-friends about how saturated we feel with the number of quality Kpop artists out there to fall in love with. The conclusion drawn was that our little brains could not possibly handle a single more bias nor any new faces to learn or names to memorize. And then said friend (ahem – KpopontheDL) sent me a new video that she just knew I would enjoy and our resolve crumbled from there. Turns out, love is definitely infinite and I always manage to find more capacity to shower it onto new little baby idols.

Or un-debuted trainees.

Khotties of the Week: Solo Female Rappers

Posted by KpopontheDL on April 1, 2017

Khottie of the Week/ Music

Hello my loves! Corinne reminded me, with her contribution of Raina to last week’s Khottie, that I haven’t highlighted any women lately.  So while thinking about that, I remembered that I promised to cover several of the gorgeous, powerful, female rappers that the Korean music scene has provided us.  The same rules apply for my selection of the lady artists as did with the gentlemen – They can’t be part of a group. They have to be solo, part of a duo, or crew. And I have to find them hot. So, in no particular order, let’s get to it.

Throwback (Musical) Thursday – I Totally Take Requests Y’all

Posted by SaraG on March 30, 2017

Music

Whilst traipsing about NYC with my darling ladies, one in particular started hitting me up about sharing a group she had recently fallen somewhat in love with. As this person was Stephanie, I said “of course I will cover them…I somewhat love them too!!” But it turns out, after a little (very little) consideration, I would totally talk about anyone that someone requested…as long as I have heard of the group/musician, like them, and have something to say. And since I do have things to say about Basterd, I will do so….now.

Musical Monday – Fo Realz

As you may recall, because I don’t think I’ve mentioned it yet (work with me on this one), this was BTS week. From Thursday through Sunday I was up and moving from 7:30am until 2:30am walking, eating, drinking, talking, laughing, screaming, singing, and all of the other things that come with a group of like minded women getting together to enjoy a much loved, shared interest/passion. It was amazing. I’m SURE you will hear all about it from Stephanie in the not too distant future, but I just want to put it out there that I met some of the most amazing women this weekend, without any of whom this trip wouldn’t have been so perfect. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for being cool, making me laugh, understanding (and sharing) my love of a darling boy with the initials JH, and for being kindred spirits.
