A Question.

General

I have a fairly simple question for you. I’ve been struggling with it for a while and I just can’t come up with an answer. Since I figure I can’t be the only one struggling with this question, I pose it to you: How is it that Choi Jin Hyuk continues to get even more attractive every year?

Just looking at these new pics of him in his upcoming drama Empress make me go WOAH. First I get distracted by the tank top. And the sweat. Then the muscles. But once I’m past all that, I look at that face and I’m struck by just how good he looks. Then I’m struck that he’s way past military age. Which means he’s solidly in his thirties. Which means…shouldn’t those ajjussi genes be kicking in soon? The only thing I can think of is that he’s one of those magical beings that somehow just get better with age. Or those genes he has says “Age? What’s that?”

Looking at these pictures are almost enough to make me check out what this new drama he’s in. When I saw that in Empress he plays one of the imperial bodyguards I almost said, saeguk? Solid pass. Take all that shirtless charm and put him in all the layers that make up a hanbok? Criminal. However, turns out that yes, it’s a royal thriller, however, Empress is one of those alternate reality stories where current day Korea is still ruled by a monarchy. Jang Nara plays the new queen, Shin Sung Rok plays the emperor and Choi Jin Hyuk is a royal bodyguard.

Since Shin Sung Rok is Shin Sung Rok, we can all pretty much be assured that the Emperor is going to be the bad guy the royal bodyguard has to 1) realize is evil 2) dispatch.

I’m guessing somewhere in there he’s also going to steal the emperor’s girl. But that’s okay, He’s played by Shin Sung Rok who is delightfully evil. (Or his characters are, I’m sure in person he’s a lovely person.)

This sort of show isn’t really my cup of k-tea. I don’t love political dramas and that’s Empress has written all over it. At this point, I’m not going to say no, but perhaps you should ask me again, right now I can’t be trusted. At least not while I”m looking at those arms…

Beautifully evil, actually. I keep waiting for him to be the semi-lead in a show where the heroine loves the evil dude until he dies for her. Or a situation where the heroine is the only one who will hold his hand while he dies, a la the bad Emperor, Liu Ziye, in Untouchable Lovers. Basically, Shin Sung Rok does sexy well, evil well and dies well!

Whew, distracted by Shin Sung Rok there for a minute. I find the contrast between Choi Jin Hyuk’s muscular masculinity and baby face disturbing. I think there is even some kind of Korean nickname for sexy baby men but it gives me the creeps. Sorry! I will probably watch but only for the never-aging, eternally perky Jang Nara or the underused Shin Sung Rok.
