This was one of those weeks reminiscent of earlier this year when I could barely keep up with all of the stuff I loved on first listen, let alone everything that was released. And there are more weeks like that to come in the next couple of months. I have a full docket of debuts, comebacks, and concerts lined up from this week until August. My husband has put me on UB restriction for any further concert tickets…meaning I can only buy tickets to see bands that appear on a predetermined ultimate bias list for the rest of the year (not counting what I’ve already purchased).
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pick UB bands? I can’t even pick a UB. Not really.
One release I was very surprised to immediately adore was the title track from Jung Ilhoon’s EP Big Wave. I saw BtoB at Kcon NY (adjacent) a couple of years ago and though I enjoyed the few songs live, this is a group I have never really gotten into. They’re one of those Kpop offerings that I know is insanely talented, but they just aren’t my thing. I always give them a shot though. I give almost every new song from everybody a shot. You never know when you’ll be surprised. So when I saw that Ilhoon had a track featuring Pentagon’s Jinho, I knew that I should sit down and actually pay attention. So I carved out a good half hour and did just that.
Always, featuring Jinho is a delightful song. It’s good. It didn’t rock my world, but Jinho, as always, was fantastic, and I was surprised by how much I liked Ilhoon’s solo style. Honestly, I knew little about him beyond his role in BtoB as lead rapper and producer. So I gave the rest of the EP a chance. My word, I’m glad I did. She’s Gone has quickly become one of my favorite songs of the spring. Both the song and the video have a bit of a dirty edge with dark lyrics, gritty images, broken doll dancing, and incredible styling all set to an almost uptempo beat. Crap, it had me from the first note.
This is exactly why I lose hours to giving new songs a change every week. You never know when the next big thing is going to bite you on the earlobe and not let go.
Other things to check out this week? Kinda’s album Anointed, NCT’s album Empathy, Marmellow’s single Wake Me Up, and DPR Live’s song Action! Featuring Gray…among many, many other releases.
