I certainly didn’t see this coming! Hwang Jung Eum has confirmed that she’s officially signing onto upcoming drama, Hoon Nam Jung Eum starring against Namgoong Min. You wonder why this is so interesting? Well, if you’re not sure of the answer for this one, someone needs to catch up on their older dramas—they played heroine/b-lead in Can You Hear My Heart!
This may date my kdrama addiction, but when I first started watching dramas one of the big must-see dramas was Can You Hear My Heart. Sadly, I think it’s so old now it may actually be considered a classic—which is fitting considering it’s the most classic makjangiest makjang that ever makjanged. We have revenge, secret babies, faux-cest, noble idiocy, and a heroine who felt the need to screech all of her lines (Okay, maybe that one wasn’t super classic in the drama sense, but it’s classic in the Hwang Jung Eum acting style sense). Oh man, the way the hero looked at her? I still feel my heart go all swoony. But we’re not here to talk about the hero or his smile, or his love for her, or his love for her family, or… Goodness, I think it might be time for a rewatch.
No, we’re here to talk about Namgoong Min who played the b-lead, someone, we to this day affectionately call Crazy Eyes for his ability to be a perfectly sound boy in a bad situation who loves his brother and then turns into an evil villain right before our very eyes. Now that is some skill!
Namgoong Min has been working steadily up the acting ladder and hasn’t been in the b-lead territory for a while now. No, he’s moved on to full hero status, which, yay, good for him! Now he’s come full circle and is reuniting with his Can You Hear My Heart co-star and having a little love-ship of their own. (Oooh…anyone getting Shin/Shinwoo vibes here? Yonghwa as b-lead in You’re Beautiful and Yonghwa as hero in Heartstrings? Here’s hoping this show is that effective—without the fish-faced kisses!)
The drama, Hoon Nam Jung Eum, is about a woman who wants to be in love but has given up on it and a man who thinks he knows a lot about relationships but says…eh…pass. Awww…. this sounds like it could be really cute! The only thing that is a bit of a drawback for me? The director is the same one who directed Tamra the Island—another older drama—which I tried several times to get through but just couldn’t. Though I’m not not sure I can lay the blame on the director for that. (Although, who do you blame a bad drama on, the writer or the director? The writer created the world, the words and the characters, but it’s the director who has control once the writer releases it. An interesting thought.)
Do you remember Can You Hear My Heart? Did you see it? Are you as excited for this one as I am? Let me know!
