So, I have a confession. I’m a name-ist. Sometimes a Kpop group’s name rubs me the wrong way enough that I set about ignoring everything they do. I know… I know… This has come back to bite me in the butt more than once, so I’m trying to get past it. It’s exactly what happened to me with MYTEEN. Anything with “teen” in it seems to me to be some kind of curse. Its like the company wants them to only make it a few years. Can you imagine a group like Shinhwa being called TeenAnything? Come on companies, set these poor kids up for success. They’re going to grow up. Most of them aren’t even teens anymore!
Anyway, SaraG, because she’s hip to my groove now, sends me this video with a “Have you seen this?” And I curse my stupid name-ism because it almost made me miss this gem. I just want to spread the whole thing on toast.
Sexy, huh? This one has gone on my playlist and while it may not stay forever, I’m really enjoying it.
MYTEEN officially debuted on July 26, 2017. They’re under Music Works, which is also home to Baek ZYoung, and Minzy. The members are Taevin, Chunjin, Eunsu, Xiheon, Junseop, Yuvin, and Hanseul. If you watched any of Mnet’s Superstar K6, Song Yuvin was in the top 10.
And here is their debut song and video, Amazing.
My first thought here is: Gosh, thats a lot of blondes! My next is that I don’t love this video. However, I’ve listened to the whole album and, separate from the video, the song is decent and the rest of the album is really solid. It’s slightly more mature and sophisticated (slightly) than one would expect from a rookie pop group. Amazing isn’t going to go on any of my playlists, but one or two of the other songs might visit. On a positive note, the styling in this video is really good.
As for the dancing, the choreo forTake It Out is just what it should be. I loved it. For Amazing its crisp and they do a good job. It’s not super original, but the song is so fast, I think this is what they could manage.
Still, not bad, and the whole package – singers, styling, dance, quality of the songs and videos – make me think they’re worth keeping an eye on. Go check them out!
