Who else here pronounced that like its spelled – onfff? ONF (온앤 오프) pronounced ‘On N Off’ if you can read the hangul, and romanized into the mess that says “Here be Kpop”. They were previously known as the WM Boys because they are under WM Entertainment, and are brother group to B1A4 and Oh My Girl.
ONF debuted on August 2, 2017. You will be relieved to know there are only 7-members: Hyojin, J-US, E-Tion, Wyatt, MK, U, and Laun. If their names didn’t get an eyeroll out of you, then you’re either new to Kpop or it has finally broken your spirit. Also of note, Park Min Kyun or MK, was at Starship and was one of the members who didn’t make it through on the competition show No.Mercy that formed MonstaX.
ONF has 2 leaders and is divided into 2 sub-units: ON Team and OFF Team. The ON team are vocals and cuteness, and the OFF team are the dancers and coolness. And there is one lonely member who is the AND. He can do both. You can’t make this shit up.
Despite the overly complicated concept, I checked out their debut song and video, and you know what? It’s great. Pure Kpop rookie group goodness. If you don’t smile and bop along, then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe get a new hobby?
There is something about the sound – it feels full to me. The raps are decent, the dancing is sharp, and its a beautifully produced video. It isn’t too cute, too hard, or trying to be too cool. Its just right there in the sweet spot that makes me want to see where they plan to go with the group.
Then they put out a fun choreo selection for their album intro. It’s like a little bit of a spicy kick at the end of one of those sweet and spicy dishes.
I can’t decide if I like this better than On/Off. It’s a similar sound – I just must love it so much for the dancing.
One thing I always try to do is listen to the whole album of groups I’m investigating. It’s generally pretty easy in Kpop – those 3 to 6 songs last me the drive to work or my walk with the dogs. One of the songs that caught my attention on their album, just by its title, was Cat’s Waltz. I mean seriously, how cute is that? On first listen, its maybe too sweet with a pretty, vaguely 80s sound. The video is aegyo-rific but entertaining. I decided it was all just too much and took a pass, and then realized that the hook I kept humming at work was from this song. Dammit.
So, ONF appears to be following in their big brother, B1A4’s, footsteps and giving us the kind of cute and catchy that is hard to resist. Keep an eye on them, I think they’ll do some great things.
