Sometimes I have gut reactions to particular songs as if they were a living, breathing person. I’ve had a crush on a song, wanted to date a song, wanted to hang out in the living with popcorn and a song, and wanted to have a torrid affair with a song. I find cyphers particularly attractive in that ‘I’d make out with you in a club’ kind of way. The idea of a true cypher just really does something to me…freestyle rapping in a successive order with underground rules and structure and different styles and textures to the sounds. Gah….it’s so much.
There is a lot of hype around season 6 of Show Me the Money. Not only are they holding auditions in Korea, New York, and LA, but there were over 12,000 applicants in the pool. That is more than 3,000 more than season 5. The list of experienced and known rappers is pretty darned impressive and includes folks I listen to on the regular like Changmo, Punchnello, Don Mills, Kebee, Sleepy, and Kasper. This is in no way an exhaustive list. I am drooling here. The mentors/judges, of which there are eight, are even more impressive. They are broken up into teams and include Team Zico and Dean, Team Dynamic Duo, Team Jay Park and Dok2, and Team Tiger JK and Bizzy.
These generous and benevolent judges have seen fit to grace us with a little display of their talents, proving yet again that they are the epitome of the Korean rap and hip-hop world. Mnet released a cypher with all eight judges each doing their part. The styles, backing tracks, and voices are distinctive and exactly what you want to hear from each of these performers. It all blends together fluidly. It’s like a really good six-minute show in a dark and kinda shitty club. You’ll find me in the back hall making out with this song. It’s not gonna be pretty, but it’ll be a night to remember…
