It’s May. It’s no longer winter. This means that we should be done with the ballads and slow songs, we should be gearing up for summer dance songs and fun Kpoppy tunes. Maybe I’m just in a funk, but I struggled with this week’s releases. There was an abundance of ballads, a couple of R&B songs that were good but not what I wanted to be listening to, and some metal that, while fun, didn’t quite do it for me. There were some contributions along the lines of typical spring Kpop, but for the most part, they didn’t strike a chord with me either. Someone will love them, and I don’t blame them for that love, they just weren’t for me…too much reggae influence and maybe not quite enough of what I wanted to see specific collaborations doing (Sorry, Triple H, it just kind of eh and I really wanted it to be wow.)
One song that did get added to the rotation is CBX’s Ka-CHING, though I think I might like the video more than I actually like the song. It’s so fun. It’s like a comic book circus with super saturated and bright colors, thick costumey makeup, ridiculous fashion, and digital elephants. But mostly, I love the boys of CBX. Any opportunity to see Xiumin in purple hair (could he be any prettier??), or to be on the receiving end of Baekhyun flirting with the camera, or to watch Chen dance is a good thing. A very good thing. And the dancing is spot on. The choreo is fantastic and I can barely take my eyes off any one of the three…which makes it awkward when they are on screen together.
Beyond that, however, I don’t have much to say. The boys of EXO are professionals. They are extremely good at what they do and when it comes to dancey pop, they excel, even in subunits. Especially in this subunit. Is this a lasting song that will change the way I listen to music. No. Is this something that speaks to my very core and forces my repressed emotions to the surface? Ah, nope. Is it super fun and will it make for an awesome addition to our basement dance parties? Absolutely.
