In general, I am not the kind of person who believes in fate, but this week was one of those rare times where my choice of Khottie felt like a Kdrama. I was watching Love for a Thousand More, and Seungyoon, who plays the lead, and who I had never paid attention to before, piqued my interest. I started digging around for pictures and information about him, and discovered that this week was his birthday. It was meant to be.
Seungyoon is the leader and main singer for Winner. I feel like I actually need to tell you this because, while the group was a big splash when they came out, they’re under YG, and they were promptly stuffed in a basement somewhere to rot. Most people know Mino, and thats about it.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Winner when I investigated them in my early days of Kpop. They had only released their first album and it was very ballad-y. I have limited tolerance for ballads, so I dismissed them as uninteresting.
I’m not sure what I was thinking. This is very interesting.
However, when they released Baby Baby with their comeback in early 2016, I was in love. The song reminded me of something from the 1960s in the best way possible. Check out this live version they did on Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook – you get a good look at each of them, and can really hear their voices. That’s Seungyoon on the far left and also the one with, in my opinion, the best voice.
Part of the shame of Seungyoon getting tossed into the basement with the rest of Winner is that he was actually doing pretty well with a solo career. He had a number 1 single from when he was was a contestant on Superstar K2, and he debuted as a solo artist with a couple of really decent singles, including one all-kill, just months before joining Winner.
Seungyoon composed, wrote the lyrics, and performed the song for Winner’s show Half Moon Friends that they did this past summer during their promotion for their new album. The show is completely charming, and just from the clips I’ve watched I am now in love with all the members of Winner. This is worth a watch – you won’t escape without an awwwwwww or misty eyes! SY has a little message for all the kids at the end. /sniffle
He’s also been in couple of dramas. One was High Kick Through the Roof 3 with Lee Jong Suk. I previewed a supercut of his parts and while the laugh track is obnoxious, its fun to see young Seungyoon.
Love for a Thousand More is not great, but its cute. I’ll probably go back and watch his We Broke Up since he’s so sexy and web dramas are easy to fit in around other things.
I hope Seungyoon continues to do well in dramas and to write and produce his own songs. He may need it. Sadly, Winner has lost Taehyun, who was the only group member I actually knew besides Mino. I don’t know what Winner is going to be like in this new incarnation. I was undecided if I was going to go back to ignoring them, but Seungyoon may have convinced me to give them another chance.
