On Monday I wrote about a pair of siblings that have successfully been writing and performing music together for years. The sister, in fact, was recently quoted as saying that her brother is coolest when he is writing music…so sweet. But, there is another side of siblings that those of us with very our own can relate to…the rivalry. You love each other so hard it hurts, would do absolutely anything for the other. But…things are just that much sweeter when that jerk finally fails at SOMETHING.
Raise your hand if you’ve heard of Zico… Put your hands down, please.
Now, raise your hand if you’ve heard of Woo Taewoon or ₩uNo….yeah, there are a lot fewer hands in the air….now put your hands down, you are starting to look silly..
For reasons that will remain somewhat confidential, my teeny tiny heart has developed a Woo Taewoon shaped hole right in the middle. Taewoon, former member of the idol group Speed is the oft overlooked older brother of one popular little rapper named Zico. Taewoon and Zico both started as trainees for Block B, but for reasons unknown to me (I have a guess supported by some rumors). Taewoon left the agency before the group debuted and signed with MBK Entertainment to debut as part of the group Coed School…which promptly split into two subunits…one male, one female. The subunits went independent of each other and in 2013, the boys, lead by Taewoon, released their debut song under the group name…you guessed it, Speed. In 2015, Taewoon left the group to work on solo projects, write, and produce before signing with Doublekick Company as a producer under the moniker ₩uNo. In his spare time, Taewoon is part of the rap crew Royal Class Crew along with Sims from M.I.B, Mino from Winner, and a number of other rappers I hold dear to my heart. He also appeared on the rap variety show Show Me the Money seasons 4 AND 5.
This boy has done a ton. Still don’t recognize him?
Woo Taewoon has been very vocal about being overshadowed by his baby brother his whole life. He has mentioned in interviews and in lyrics that he feels like even his parents love Zico more. Zico has publicly said that his brother is “innocent, bright, and dense,” not the image our boy was going for I’m sure. The pair seem to be getting along better at present, Taewoon even appeared in the video for Zico’s latest collaboration, Bermuda. I swear I’m not obsessed…but if you’re interested, you can see him at 1’41”.
In 2014, Taewoon released the song Blind under the name Tae Woon as part of Royal Class. The song is about his struggles with feeling lost, unsupported, and alone. One of the most moving (translated) lines is repeated over and over as part of the chorus, “Grab a handful of grass instead of looking at the light.” It makes my soul tear up a little.
