For Monday’s post I watched A LOT of Christmas themed Kpop videos…way more than I would usually do in any given year. For today, I was going to poll some folks on their favorite Kpop Christmas videos, watch them all, and then write a post on my favorites from that list spanning the last few years. That….that didn’t happen. Couldn’t do it. Too much Kpop Christmas. So instead, I am going to share with you one of my favorites…it has all of the key points discussed in the last post, a tree, someone decorating said tree, cake, and soul.
Everyone has read and heard Stephanie extol the virtues of one Mr. Roy Kim on both her blog and the podcast. I happen to very much agree with her on just how great this man is. Kim is the son of an artist and a former manufacturing CEO. He grew up largely in Toronto and is currently an undergrad at George Washington University. He seems to keep his ‘celebrity life’ in South Korea separate from his ‘real life’ over here in the Western Hemisphere. I admire that about the kid. It makes him seem like someone more tangible than a lot of idols.
All of that is neither here nor there during the holiday season. What we are (I am) really here to discuss is Roy Kim’s Christmas song It’s Christmas Day released in 2014. This song sounds exactly as it should. It starts with him playing piano and singing a ballad-like song full of all sorts of emotion – as expected in a Roy Kim song. This song, however, really kicks in when he switches from from tickling the ivories to playing the guitar (an acoustic, on a couch, with cupcakes) with all sorts of instrumentation backing him up. There is a sweeping climax with what sounds like a full orchestra and the lyric “cause it’s Christmas day” repeated over and over. Honestly, it could get boring. But it doesn’t. Roy Kim is the master of using his voice to change things up just enough to keep me completely hooked. I have said it in the past, to get me to REALLY love a song all it needs is just one moment where something unexpected happens that makes my heart clench. Roy Kim does this just by making his voice go up instead of down while singing “cause it’s Christmas.” One. Time. I wait for it. Hold my breath for it.
He wins. Yay, Christmas!
