In the Korean music scene, the season tends to shape the type of songs being released…more so than most music scenes I have ever experienced. The autumn is for break up songs and ballads. And I don’t mean a power ballad or a ballad with a beat. I mean a slow, mournful, bring-you-to-tears kind of song. It’s all about being sad, lonely and as chilly on the inside as you are on the outside.
Sam Kim (샘김) is good at that shit. He is a Korean-American singer-songwriter that was discovered through the third Season of the variety show K-Pop Star. He’s got pipes. He is a baby (WHO WAS BORN IN 98???) so I am not sure what right he has to give me feelings. I can hardly wait to see what comes out of his mouth once he has a chance to really experience some of what this world has to offer. This isn’t typically my type of music. At all. But I really think this kid has got something…or the start of something…and we should be watching him. He has some good collaborations out there already and I think he is finding a good path.
While album I am Sam was actually released in April of this year, the song ‘Seattle’ was given to the world as a single with its MV on November 4…just in time to make South Korea sad for the fall…they had a long and persistent summer this year, Alix and I can vouch for that. Even in October everyone seemed ready to stop listening to summer songs, to put on a hoodie and start bobbing their heads to some acoustic guitar with a single tear slowly making its way down their collective cheeks. It could have been the humidity.

As a bonus, check out a radio performance of his song ‘Touch My Body’…oh, that smile at 2’10”…come on….
