Well, that was a fast round-about! Kang Haneul has officially bailed on the upcoming drama Gaia. While I was first excited about this show, looking at the details that are coming out of it, I can’t help but cheer his decision. Run for it fast, my friend, run fast.
So, what took this hmmmm….might be interesting to…uhhh hellz no? That would be the leaking word of additional casting choices. Chanyeol from EXO? What the? Don’t get me wrong. I might not like EXO, but I have a wicked soft spot for Chanyeol. He is ADORABLE. However, is he an actor? If you saw last year’s web drama, EXO Next Door, you’ll know the answer to that question is a NO. Sorry Chanyeol. Continue to be an adorable puppy, acting just isn’t for everyone.
It seemed weird that Kang Haneul and Chanyeol would be considered for a drama together. Kang Haneul is actually making a name for himself as a solid actor. To be matched with the sort of casting they were going for (Heroine being talked Yuri from Girls Generation) shows that this is not the sort of show Kang Haneul is working towards in this point in his career.
With the premise of idol on a deserted island with everyday heroine, I can see this being a fun idol-cast romp. Fill it with actors and idols all of the same caliber, and the show would be along the lines of EXO Next Door. But that is not the sort of show serious actors and writers—as not just Kang Haneul but the writer tied to the project Song Jinah has also bailed—want to be a part of.
So I guess I’ll continue to wait for my chance to see Kang Haneul in his own drama. Not to mention the fact that he is willing to pass on a drama even if he’s given lead? Just makes me respect him even more.
