We’ve all had these shows haven’t we? Those shows, where you just NEED to know what happens? Those shows which make you play the “Just one more episode game” until you look outside the window and realize the sky is turning light? When coworkers may think that you’re working diligently but really your mind is on the latest wrench the Big Bad Kdrama Mama has thrown at your couple?
Yeah, that’s the sort of shows I’m talking about. These shows, good or bad, for some reason capture our attention and just won’t let go. When you’re watching these shows, time will just fly by and you’ll look up realizing you haven’t eaten in 8 hours. During these shows, there is usually a great deal laughing, crying, or general shouting at the screen. And at the end of the episode? There is either the mad scramble for the remote or the legendary bathroom sprint (because, heaven forbid I go while the show is on, or take the extra minute that it would take to walk up stairs rather than climb them at a dead run).
Or is that just me? Yeah. It could totally be me.
Anyway here is my top 5 list of shows which were so cracktastic I couldn’t stop watching.
This show isn’t cracktastic from the start. To be honest, this is one of the set of disks I bought during my attempts to buy from ebay (before I had my Roku box). Do yourself a favor and do not do this! Read why here. Anyway. I watched the first couple of episodes and it was awful, so dreary and depressing! I dropped it and moved onto something else. Later, I decided to give it a try. Luckily, the sad dreary and depressing bits are just the set up for the rest of the show. As soon as CYHMH hit the modern story, BAM the crack set in and I was hooked. There are so many twists and turns during this show, I was on the edge of my couch, yelling at my screen. Almost every episode ends in a cliffhanger. Basically? I never had a chance. If you haven’t had a chance to see Can You Hear My Heart, I really suggest you give it a try. If you have, you can read my review here. And I just remembered, Can You Hear My Heart was on my very first Top 5 list, Favorite Couples. Aww…
This is an example of how a cracktastic show doesn’t necessarily mean the show is good. This show is crazy. It’s overly dramatic, all the characters are connected in increasingly unbelievable ways. Seriously, are these people the only people living in Seoul? It seemed like it the amount of times they just bumped into each other. And at 159 episodes it was hella long (the episodes are a half hour long, but still). However? I didn’t care. I HAD to find out what was going to happen. I had to finally see evil Sae Wa get hers. I had to see Dong Hae and Bong Yi finally get together. This is the one I distinctly remember tweeting “No wonder I have a headache, just realized I haven’t eaten since breakfast” This dawned on me after 10. I was so glad when this show was over so I could have a little kdrama break. Who knew I would then go right into:
This is a show you don’t really hear so much about. I was hooked right from the start. Which was irritating as I wasn’t ready for another crack-y sort of Kdrama. Luckily at 50 episodes it was a much easier run. I enjoyed the story a lot. The last few episodes irritated the heck out of me but it was still pretty riveting. That final episode though irritated the heck out of me! I’m looking forward to rewatching this for review in a few weeks.
This is another show I bought during my ill advised eBay purchasing. I chose to watch this after Scent of a Woman because I wanted to watch something that wasn’t going to make me cry like someone in my own family had died (SOAW was my first weepie drama). This show was so cute! The music, the characters, the stories just kept me wanting more. I, unfortunately, had a 60th birthday party for a past employer to go to and, while I was there, I kept wondering what was going to happen next, and how long I would have to stay before I could sneak out and make my way back to my TV. When the subtitles went wonky as those eBay purchases do, I was so frustrated, but kept on watching even though I could only guess at what the characters were actually saying. Now that’s a cracktastic drama.
Yes, I know this is not a great drama. However, it is my very first Kdrama, so it will always hold a special place in my kdrama lovin’ heart. I had just moved into a new house and had decided to not have cable or internet there for a while. It was all fine for about 4 months until I had that really bad day at work and started watching Playful Kiss (I work for an internet company). I was hooked. Hardcore. I couldn’t watch at home, I ended up going into work early the next day to get an episode in before work. Then I realized the weekend was coming up and I would have to go two days before I could find out what was going on with that kookie Oh Hani. I made the decision to fork out the cash not only for the disks on Amazon, but to also spring for overnight shipping so I’d be sure to have them Saturday morning. And so my Kdrama obsession was born!
So those are my cracktastick shows. Now, these are not my favorite shows. That will be a different post. I don’t know what it is about some shows that just make you need to consume them (for better or worse) in one gulp or “One Shot!”
